On October 10, 2024, GOB launched the world’s first compostable earplugs made from mycelium — yes, mushrooms! This root-like part of fungi can be used to create sustainable materials including earplugs. These earplugs absorb sound evenly, providing balanced acoustics and clarity, unlike traditional foam earplugs that distort specific frequencies. They are already turning heads, with major partners like Formula 1 and even pop superstar Billie Eilish getting behind the brand.

How Did GOB Come to Life?

A spin class turned up the volume and turned on an idea for mycelium earplugs! Lauryn, the founder of GOB, found herself in a class where the instructor wasn’t just cycling—she was belting out the lyrics. The noise led to an epiphany. Once she was back in San Francisco, she texted her friend Bailey: “Dude, compostable earplugs!” Bailey, slightly confused, asked if Lauryn had found them. Lauryn replied, “Nope. They don’t exist.” And just like that, GOB’s earplugs were born.

Making the Leap

The seed for GOB was planted when Lauryn was working in sustainable design at her agency, Prowl, in San Francisco. The studio was dedicated to creating products that were not only functional but also had a minimal environmental impact. This is where Lauryn’s passion for sustainability took root.

Initially, GOB was a side project while Lauryn continued to run Prowl. But as GOB started to gain traction, Lauryn realized she couldn’t balance both ventures long-term. After some reflection, and with a trusted partner holding down the fort at Prowl, Lauryn made the tough decision to go all-in with GOB. She sought advice from mentors, embraced her role as CEO, and built a team that was aligned with GOB’s mission.

The launch of regenerative single-use earplugs is just the beginning. GOB is now working on building a game-changing ecosystem of wellness products, all designed to be functional, sustainable, and kind to the planet.
